On a weekend trip to Izu, I slipped back in time to a place where modernity was unknown. Izu is a postcard perfect seaside resort lined with traditional Japanese ryokans. Each ryokan offers hot spring onsen spas with views of the sea, the spirited forest or pristine Japanese gardens. From the courtyard pond with golden koi to the perfectly ordered wooden corridors, the essence of Japan could be found throughout the resort. There was nothing more I could do but to sit back and take in the aroma of the tatami matt and the sense of peaceful nothingness.
