Wandering around Tokyo is like tumbling down Alice’s hole to a magical land where pastel colours and fluffy cuddly things take control of reality. This was the exact surreal feeling I got when we ventured to Hyper Japan this weekend at the Earl’s Court Convention Centre. Although the venue itself could have used some better lights and some livening up, the exhibitors and the random visitors dressed head to toe as Harajuku girls made me miss the madness of Japan.
My first sushi making experience provided by the folks down at Sozai Cooking School which will be opening at the start of 2013 (yes, a little ashamed about this) was a great success! And who knew that sushi tastes the best if there’s a little air pocket in the rice?
We followed the sushi making experience with something I can say I am a little more experienced with, sake tasting! We joined the human conveyor belt which passed 10 delightful sake merchants who kept pouring us little “tasters” of various imported sakes. The experience was definitely the highlight of my day and having consumed countless plastic thimbles of sake I was embarrassingly tipsy by the end. My favourite by far was Masumi, a premium sake from Nagano with a brewery stemming back to the 15th century.
